About the Club

Phuket Dragons (formerly Rawai Nai Harn Dragon Boat Club) were formed in February 2011 with an emphasis on fun & fitness for ALL as dragonboating is one of the very few sports where men and women of any age can train and compete together. Currently we have over 45 male and female members ranging in age from 22 to 68, including former Russian and British National team paddlers. Non-paddling members are also welcome and are involved in the operation of the club and participate in the social events.

The Club is administered by an elected committee of experienced professionals. We also enjoy both local and international affiliations with clubs such as The British Dragon Boat Association (BDA), the ACCA Dragon Boat Team in NSW, Australia, Phuket Charity Foundation (PCF) and Chickynet.

Training occurs three times a week using equipment currently on loan (2 boats, life jackets and wooden paddles), under the guidance of two experienced trainers, 4 helms and a safety officer.

Our Achievements

Last year - June 30th to 1st July 2012 we competed in the 33rd Penang International Dragon Boat Festival 2012. This was a very exciting opportunity for the club to represent Phuket, with 17 members traveling to Malaysia for the regatta, however, we would like to attract more members from throughout the island who may also want to compete in other International Regattas in the future with a view to holding one ourselves on the island at some point.

The Club hosts a monthly quiz night to raise funds for the operating expenses and for Charity. In October, RNDBC, alongside two other organizations, donated supplies, clothing, and raised 5,000 Baht in aid of the Northern Flood Relief appeal. We regularly attract between 40 and 50 players each month and are planning Bingo Nights, Bowls in Kamala, and Party Events throughout the year. All of these functions hold opportunities for potential sponsors to advertise their services both on the pre-event publicity and at the event. By raising funds through sponsorship, once club operating costs are covered, we will be able to apply all remaining funds raised to support activities in the local community.

Last year the club successfully planned and ran the Phuket Charity Dragonboat Race Day 2012 on 5th February 2012 at Laguna. We recruited 6 teams from across the island, raising 24,000 baht in entry fees and bringing over 150 people to both the Races and the adjacent Rubber Duck Race. One team consisted of underprivileged teens from Phuket Lomas who paddle with us on Sundays. All of our members attended and were clearly identified by club shirts and caps bearing our existing sponsors logos. In addition, we provided an information stall with an advertising banner, distributed brochures and sold RNDBC merchandise. RNDBC Members attended the day before to set up and provide training to new teams and those wanting to try paddling. Our committee and members provided a very smooth running event which kept perfectly to schedule and a great day was had by all.
